Traditionally, tranexamic acid has been used in medical practice to treat excessive blood loss from major trauma, surgery, postpartum bleeding, and heavy menstruation due to its blood-clotting properties. Tranexamic acid provides a powerful and specific anti-inflammatory action, inhibiting the tyrosinase synthesis (the pigment producing process) in melanocytes. At the same time it blocks the transfer of pigment from melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) to keratinocytes (the keratin-synthesizing cells found in the outermost layer of skin – the epidermis). Tranexamic acid also calms the skin and helps restore the skin barrier. Tranexamic acid is used for melasma (dark spots) treatment, including pregnancy melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Tranexamic acid slows the production of melanin by inhibiting a pathway known as the plasminogen/plasmin pathway. It is safe to use for all skin types and colors.
